Injury prevention: just another benefit of chiropractic care
I am sure you know that chiropractic care is a great way to treat pain naturally, but did you know that regular care can also help to prevent injuries? Before I elaborate on this let’s talk about your core. I am sure you have heard the word "core" as it pertains to the muscles in your abdomen, these muscles are essential for providing stabilization in our body. Our core must "turn on" or be activated before we move certain ways so that our body remains stable and balanced; this is referred to as "feed forward" activation and it is done without our conscious awareness by our central nervous system.
There was a research study done in New Zealand that looked at 90 healthy students. They found that out of this group 17 of the students out of the group lacked this feed-forward activation of their abdominal muscles. They checked these students again 6 months later and found that there were still 13 out of the original 17 that still were unable to activate their core muscles. Each of these students were then assessed by a chiropractor and all were found to have tightness and restriction in the joints of their hips.
Each of the students were then adjusted and following that adjustment 40% of the students had improvement in activating their core muscles. These findings suggest that poor movement in our hips can impact our body's ability to activate our core abdominal muscles which can predispose our lower back to injury.
Regular chiropractic care is known to keep your body functioning at its best and this is just one of the studies done that show that it can even help to prevent injuries.
So, if you are active and looking to prevent injuries in the future consider making chiropractic care part of your regular routine.
